I tried to post my college football preview three times and it just wouldn't work. I have no idea why, but you all missed out on my amazing predictions, many of which already look to be dead wrong. I clearly overrated Oregon and once again underrated Alabama. I watched several games over the weekend. Here are my random thoughts:
I can't decide if Boise State is legit or if Oregon is just much worse than I expected. Boise's defense looked great. Oregon couldn't do anything, which surprised me with Masoli and Blount coming back. Too bad Blount went Brock Lesnar on Hout after the game. I'm glad he was suspended for the rest of the season. He earned it. Oregon will really miss his average of -0.6 yards per carry. Also, how is Hout not being punished? It sets a bad precedent that after winning a football game you can go and taunt/goad someone into punching you and not have any repercussions.
Jonathan Dwyer and Jahvid Best might give the big 3 quarterbacks some Heisman competition. Dwyer broke off a 73 yard TD on his first carry of the season. Best took one 73 yards for a TD on his second carry of the season. Neither stayed in the game past the middle of the third quarter, and they average 13.6 (Dwyer) and 13.7 (Best) yards per carry. These two are legit and will keep putting up big numbers. If either of them can get to a BCS game and have their team be relevant by the end of the year, maybe the big trophy will go to someone other than a quarterback.
Alabama looked good. I expected them to have a good defense, but their offense looks much better than anticipated. They had almost 500 yards of offense against Virginia Tech! Va Tech is known for defense, and Bama just wore them down. Nick Saban has never had back-to-back 10-win seasons, but that might change this year. They looked good. Much better than when they got it handed to them by the Utes.
How about Michigan and Notre Dame? Will either of these teams still be relevant at the end of the season? While I'm not a huge fan of either team, college football is more interesting when these teams are good. The same goes for Miami.
I guess BYU looked ok... The defense was awesome against Oklahoma. I thought Oklahoma would give them the business in this game. If you told me before the game that BYU would be without Harvey Unga (1,000+ yards the last two years) and Matt Bauman (leading tackler last season), have 4 turnovers, and score 14 points I would have told you that BYU loses by 35, minimum. The Cougars outcoached the Sooners. Period. Memo to non-cartel schools looking to make a mark nationally: play Oklahoma. In the past three years they have lost to Boise State, TCU, and BYU. I think Utah has an opening for the Sooners next year...
Oklahoma State has a chance to make some serious noise. If their defense continues to play like it did against Georgia, they might be the best team in the Big 12.
I stand by my prediction that Baylor will make it to a bowl game for the first time since 1994, even with Wake Forest, UConn, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Nebraska, Missouri, and Texas on the schedule. This Baylor team has some talent, folks. Watch for them.
The MWC is better at the top than the Big East, ACC, and maybe the Big 10. TCU, Utah, and BYU would all win the Big East or ACC, and would be near the top in the Big 10. BYU, Utah, and TCU are a combined 19-11 against BCS teams since 2005, including wins over Oklahoma (2), Alabama, UCLA (3), Georgia Tech, Oregon, Michigan, Texas Tech, and Oregon State. Please, show some respect.
I'm not sure what to expect this week between the Ohio State and USC. The Trojans always get up for big games and Ohio State struggled with Navy last week. Everyone is predicting a USC blowout similar to what happened last year, but I wouldn't be so fast to dismiss the Buckeyes. I think USC wins but I expect the game to be much closer than the 35-3 drubbing from last season.
That's all I have for today. I had better get back to work...
