Prognosticating College Football

I have been pretty bored lately, and with my work cracking down on my writing a blog at work, and also with my work not paying me enough to have internet at my house so that I can blog there, this site has gone to pure shite.  But no matter.  I guess I will just write when I can.

I got to thinking about how it's time for College Football.  The buzz on talk radio is mostly centered on college football, NCAA 2010 came out, and I am starting to get a little bit excited about it all.  I remember on our old blog, when T-bone used to try to make predictions about college football.

I am not knowledgeable about the whole game until about 4 weeks into the season, so I can't do the same.  Today, I just wanted to look back at T-Bone's predictions from last year to see if he knows his stuff or not.  First, he wrote a column called Top 10 College Football Teams Of 2008-2009.  If you'll click on that link, you'll see that T-Bone had the following teams rated as the Top 10, with the position they actually ended up in the AP poll:

1. Oklahoma (5)
2. Ohio State (9)
3. Florida (1)
4. Georgia (13)
5. USC (3)
6. Missouri (19)
7. LSU (UR)
8. Clemson (UR)
9. West Virginia (23)
10. Auburn (UR)

So, he got 4 out of 10.  Not bad, considering these were pre-season picks.  Everyone missed on Clemson and LSU, so you can't really hold those against him either. (except for the fact that he picked Clemson.)

He also predicted:

5 Teams Under the Radar (not in the National Title hunt, but will surprise this year): Oklahoma State, North Carolina, Oregon State, Ole Miss, Pittsburgh.
I'd say he was right on all except Pittsburgh.  Ok. St, Oregon St, and Ole Miss all ended the season in the Top 25, and North Carolina was much improved.
Another prediction:
5 Teams that are Overhyped (teams that are ranked higher than they should be in most preseason polls): Virginia Tech, Texas, Wisconsin, Alabama, Arizona State.
He didn't fare as well here.  Virginia Tech had a solid season, Texas probably should have played for the BCS Championship, and Alabama finished ranked 6th.  Wisconsin and Arizona State were not as good as most people thought.
And his last prediction of that article:
Most likely BCS-busters: 1. BYU 2. Utah 3. Fresno State 4. Boise State 5. TCU
All of these teams but Fresno State ended up in the Top 25, so I'd say T-bone was right on the money on this, although this is easy to predict.  These are the only 5 teams that could ever bust the BSC, frankly.
Overall, on this article, I'd say T-Bone did fairly well.  I'd give him a B-.
The next predictive article T-Bone wrote was called College Football's Best Games 2008.  His predictions and the results of those games in parenthesis:
Ohio State at USC (3-35)
Georgia at Arizona St. (10-27)
Auburn at West Virginia (17-34)
Illinois at Missouri (42-52)
Kansas at South Florida (34-37)
BYU at Utah (24-48)
Georgia at LSU (38-52)
Florida at Georgia (49-10)
LSU at Florida (21-51)
In the end, there were really only 2 great games (Kasas-South Florida and Illinois-Missouri) and 1 pretty good game (Georgia-LSU).  This has to be one of the hardest things to predict pre-season, but T-bone can do better this year.  I give him a C-.
In his next article of prognostications, T-bone predicted who the Impact Freshmen Of 2008 would be.  And his picks, along with some info in parenthesis about each player:
Arthur Brown, LB Miami (Brown struggled during his freshman year despite being Miami's top-rated recruit. Has moved to Inside Linebacker for his sophomore season.)
Caleb King, RB Georgia (Appeared in 11 games recording 61 carries for 247 yards and a TD)
Da’Quan Bowers, DE Clemson(third-team freshman All-American by Phil Steele...honorable mention freshman All-American by CollegeFootballNews.com...started six games and played 480 snaps, more than any other non-starter on Clemson.)
Darrell Scott, RB Colorado (He finished his freshman season with 343 rushing yards off of 87 carries)
Julio Jones, WR Alabama (Jones was named to the second team All-SEC, SEC Freshman of the Year, and the SEC Coaches' All-Freshman Team. Jones finished the regular season with 58 receptions, 924 yards, and four touchdowns.)
Patrick Johnson, CB LSU (Started final four games of season, including bowl win over Georgia Tech .Finished year with 41 tackles, one interception and three pass breakups .Added a forced fumble and a quarterback hurry .)
In actuality, all of these players did make some contribution to their teams.  Jones and Bowers were pretty big impact guys, so I'm going to give T-Bone a B+ on this one.
Overall, T-bone did a pretty good job at making pre-season picks.  Put him up against some other national "experts" and he fairs quite well.
Hopefully, he will grace us with his presence in this space again with some more College Football Predictions.

lets not forget that hawaii busted the bcs a couple of years ago......and also rutgers was a team to make a run at it in recent memory..............so i think you have to give him a better grade for the bcs busters...............also, FLorida will definitely win the national championship this year.........there is no doubt in my mind and i am the smartest person I know......i once scored higher on an ig test than one of my best friends dad who was actually one of my highschool professors............bye
