Last week I pissed and moaned about Kevin Garnett’s intensity routine on the sidelines when he was growling and glaring at the entire Bulls team. I realize that KG has a rep and he needs to keep his street cred by calling everyone in sight a MFer, but what happens when he’s away from the game? Does the intensity remain? Does the Big Ticket bring the same juice to everyday life?
When KG hits the 7-11 for a Coke, does he interact with Enrique Munoz the same way he would with Derrick Rose? I assume KG rolls into the store wearing his 6 pound earrings, screaming at Enrique, “get me a Super effing Big Gulp!” As Enrique scrambles so he doesn’t get KG’s pimp hand, KG starts stringing expletives uncontrollably. I could even see Garnett running some “at least I graduated high school” smack at Enrique.
What about family life? I can’t even fathom what it must be like to be married to the Big Ticket. Does he glare at his wife when she doesn’t cook his food the way he wants it? Does he bring the same intensity to the bedroom? Goodness, the guy is a seven footer… What kind of intensity does she bring to the encounter? Does she scream at him when he isn’t cutting it? Does Kevin constantly berate her when he doesn’t get his way?
Imagine Garnett’s kid. Seeing daddy threaten to cut people’s heads off, or whatever he yells at his opponents, must be quite the experience for a kid. In addition to his mastery of hamburger cooking, my father is a professor. It sure would have been interesting as a kid to see my dad cursing at students when they missed a test question or didn’t understand a concept. KG’s kid must think that’s just what people do. When his kid is dropping F bombs on classmates because they don’t know their times tables or can’t grasp the complexity of cursive, no one will be shocked. “Oh yeah, your dad is the NBA’s version of the Zodiac Killer (with all due respect to Jayson Williams and Ron Artest). We’ll let it slide.”
Even Bobby Knight thinks Garnett is over the top. I only hope that KG can channel this intensity off the court so we don’t end up with an Orenthal situation in the future.
