As a long-time self-respecting Lakers fan, I couldn’t let PlayBoyd’s most recent post go unaddressed. I admit, I’m not as big a fan of this version of the Lak e Show as in years past. It has been well documented on this site and our past site that I am not a big fan of Gasol, Vujabic, or Kobe. Kobe has been growing on me lately, and even though Boyd and Jim would disagree with me, I still think Kobe is the best player in the league. LeBron is making a huge push, but I still give the nod to Kobe. I just don’t like him all that much.
Even as a Lakers fan, I happen to respect the current Celtics team. I have always liked Ray Allen and KG, but as my brother-in-law and die hard Lakers fan Rob pointed out, KG’s goaltending every shot after the whistle gets freaking old. I used to like Paul Pierce, but I’ll get to that. As a Lakers fan I had to respond to yesterdays post (which it appears many people took pretty seriously). First off, Boyd is as good a Celtics fan as you’ll meet–objective, reasonable, and he generally doesn’t wear green goggles. That said, here are my top 3 reasons that people hate the Boston Celtics (I was shooting for 5, but I’m in grad school and just don’t have the time tonight).
3. Boston in general Ever listen to sports talk radio and not hear someone from Boston call up and make a complete a$$ out of himself? Me neither. Boston fans act like they have been oppressed for so many years in spite of the recent success of the Patriots, Red Sox, and Celtics. It gets “wicked” annoying. If God gave the world an enema he would insert the tube in Boston, Mass.
2. Celtics fan and Paul Pierce I used to like Paul Pierce. Really. I still respect him - how can I not respect someone who got stabbed like a pincushion and came back to have a tremendous career? He’s always been a Celtics guy and I respect that loyalty. But reading about Paul Pierce and him being the closest thing to deity on earth (on this site and many others) in the past has made it tough for me to continue liking the guy. After the finals last year I read an online article written by some guy who claimed to be from Boston. The guy actually said that Paul Pierce is the best player in the NBA. Honestly? I can come up with a bunch of guys off the top of my head that I would put above Pierce (Kobe, Dwight, Duncan, KG, Wade, Dirk, Amare, Chris Paul, LeBron). I still respect him-and he is really, really good-but hearing Celtic fan yammer on and on about Paul Pierce and how we must be in the midst of the second coming gets tiresome. For those of you who are not believers, I have added a picture of Pierce that will serve as evidence of his resurrective powers.
1. The Championships The Celtics have won 17 NBA championships. It’s kind of like the Yankees–they’ve won a ton, and people hate a winner. Oh by the way, they won 9 of those titles before 1966 when the league had 8 teams. Congrats, boys. That’s about as impressive as winning the championship in a really tough rec league. The Lakers have more wins than any team in NBA history and have the highest winning percentage of any team in league history. Since the NBA expanded to 14 teams in 1968, the Celtics have 8 championships. This is certainly impressive, but as a comparison, the Lakers have 9. NBA titles in the last 30 years: Celtics 4, Lakers 8. That’s wicked awesome.
