Five Things I Think

Again, I must admit that I clearly ripped this idea off from Peter King. Here are five things I think:

1. Not much would be better than seeing an NBA Finals matchup of the Celtics and the Lakers – provided that both teams are completely healthy. The last two NBA champions, the total number of titles, the rivalry, the talent on both teams, the defense… It would be amazing. Baseball missed out on having a Dodgers-Yankees world series this year that would have drawn more interest than the current matchup, and I only hope the NBA doesn’t suffer the same fate and have the Magic vs. the Spurs or something. The Celtics and Lakers each have five guys who can go for 20 points in any game and they both play very good defense. I pray that we see this matchup in June.

2. Urban Meyer is a wuss. He suspended Brandon Spikes for one half for eye gouging a Georgia running back on Saturday. How is that enough of a punishment? Can you imagine what Urb would be saying if that happened to one of his guys? Spikes deserves to be suspended for at least one game. If you didn’t see what happened, check it out here. That kind of stuff is ridiculous and even Urban Meyer – who lets just about anything off the field go – ought to have enough balls to suspend his best defensive player for more than one half of football. It reminds me of when Utah (pre-Urban) played Utah State several years ago and Utah running back Chris Fuamatu Ma’afala said that USU players were grabbing and punching his nuts in the bottom of a pileup. Just play football. Spikes deserves a minimum of one full game.

3. Young people don't like baseball too much. The presence of so many erectile dysfunction ads may indicate that baseball is just going to continue getting less and less popular. The ED ads are aimed at the demographic that is tuning in to the world series games, and it ain’t the 18-34 market that they want. Young people don’t really watch baseball – they watch the NBA, NFL, and UFC instead. Maybe I'm reading too much into this, but I wonder what it means for the future of MLB.

4. College football is amazing. We could legitimately have six undefeated teams at the end of the season, with four from BCS conferences: Cincinnati, Iowa, Florida/Alabama, Texas, TCU, and Boise State. With all of those undefeated teams, what will we get in the BCS? A bunch of people asking “what if.” I love college football, but this is getting ridiculous. I know it’s trendy to bash the BCS, but having four undefeated teams not get a chance to win the title on the field is just too much. Auburn, Utah, and Boise State have all finished unbeaten in the past few years and not had an opportunity to play for the title. No one wants to see Iowa or Cincinnati in the title game, but if they're unbeaten at the end of the year they have earned the right to settle it on the field.

5. Brett Favre is still pretty dang good. I get tired of hearing about Brett all the time, and I thoroughly believe him to be an attention whore, but he can clearly still play football at a high level. I still think Green Bay did the right thing by letting him go - Aaron Rogers is really good, as evidenced by his being the top rated QB in the NFL so far this year - but when surrounded by a good cast Favre can still lead a team to a great season. I don't think Minnesota will win the NFC, but sending a limo to the airport to pick up Brett has paid off. Even though I hate to admit it.
