Why, Steve Phillips? Why?

Steve Phillips had a great gig. He was a baseball analyst on ESPN, chiming in with his “expert opinion” on Baseball Tonight and Sportscenter. He had a dream job. Short of being a professional athlete or musician, I can think of few things that most men would rather do for a living than sports analysis. Phillips had a good thing going, and he threw it down the tubes for a little side action. Phillips was fired from ESPN on October 25, 2009 for having a sexual affair with a co-worker.

When I first heard the news that Phillips was, to steal a mid-90s R&B reference from H-Town, "knockin’ da boots" with someone at ESPN, I was a bit disappointed. I mean, the guy is married, and marriage is important: commitment, love, family, obligation, etc., etc. I thought to myself, that’s too bad. Taking a chance on your marriage and career for some action on the side, is it really worth it? Then I started going through the possibilities: Erin Andrews.

Now, let it be known that I do not condone extra marital affairs. Period. But, if Erin Andrews is the one you’re hitting the sheets with on the side, I can at least see the allure. But it was not Ms. Andrews. So if not Erin Andrews, who? Hannah Storm? Rachel Nichols? Linda Cohn, boob job and all? How about Cindy Brunson? But it was none of the above. It was the amazing Booke Hadley (see impressive photo below).

Now, mind you, I’m saying this with no knowledge of Steve Phillips’ relationship with his wife, Marni, or what Marni looks like, but COME ON! You risked your job and your marriage for some action out of Brooke Freaking Hadley? I could break out all the clichés about ugly people and slump busters, but the picture truly says enough. This is reminiscent of Hugh Grant getting busted with a whore while dating Heather Graham. Why risk it?

I don’t know much about Steve Phillips, but I know that he has shown poor judgment in the past, first as GM of the Mets (his drafting of David Wright is the notable exception) and now as a recently fired ESPN analyst. Men around the world are wondering: what led you to risk it all for Brooke Hadley? Please, Steve – break your silence and tell us.
